Three parts make the flame windproof

The chimney

The most recognizable part of a Zippo after the case is the perforated metal shield around the wick, called the chimney. It does two jobs at once. The solid walls block wind from hitting the flame directly at its base, where a flame is most vulnerable. The pattern of holes then admits just enough air to keep combustion going, while breaking up gusts so they arrive as diffuse airflow rather than a blast. A flame that never takes a direct hit at its base can bend and flutter without being separated from its fuel source, which is what blowing out a flame actually means.

The wick and fuel system

A disposable butane lighter burns a jet of gas. Interrupt the jet for an instant and the flame is gone. A Zippo instead burns liquid fuel drawn up a wick from cotton batting inside the insert. The wick itself stays saturated, so the flame sits on a continuously fed, wind-sheltered source rather than a stream of gas. Combined with the chimney, this is why the flame relights itself around the wick even after a gust flattens it sideways.

The fuel

Zippo fuel is liquid lighter fluid, a light petroleum distillate that vaporizes readily at the wick. Because the fuel is a liquid held in cotton rather than a pressurized gas, there is no valve to blow shut and no jet to disperse. The rest of the design

Around those three parts sits the hardware that made the lighter famous. The hinged lid opens with the click Zippo owners know by sound, and closing it snuffs the flame by cutting off air, which is also the only off switch the lighter has. The striker wheel scrapes a flint to throw sparks directly onto the fuel-soaked wick. One thumb motion opens the lid and spins the wheel, which is why the lighter can be operated one-handed and in the dark. There are no electronics, no seals under pressure, and no parts that require tools beyond a screwdriver for the flint screw. Windproof does not mean the flame never goes out

A fair description of a Zippo in heavy wind: the flame survives conditions that instantly kill a disposable lighter, and it relights easily when conditions beat it anyway. In an extreme gust the flame can still be torn off the wick. What the design guarantees is that this takes far more wind than an unshielded flame can tolerate, and that a re-strike puts sparks straight onto a saturated wick sheltered by the chimney, so recovery is one thumb motion. Why genuine matters

The Zippo shape has been copied for decades, and the copies miss what makes the original work.
